As families prepare for the back-to-school season, it is an ideal time to consider how a child’s daily routine is structured. A healthy routine includes nutritious meals, adequate sleep, appropriate homework, physical activity, social interaction, and time to relax and play. Among these elements, morning breaks deserve particular attention.
Children spend much of the school day in structured academic environments, where they are expected to concentrate, process information, and follow instructions. A break provides an essential mental and physical reset. Unstructured play allows children to decompress, reduce stress, improve their mood, interact with peers, and return to the classroom better prepared to focus and learn. Physically, it promotes movement, coordination, exercise, and social development.
Recently the American Academy of Paediatrics’ (AAP) updated their policy statement on school breaks. For the first time in 13 years, the organization has issued new guidance emphasizing that breaks are far more than a fun interruption to the school day. It is an important component of children’s physical, mental, emotional, social, and academic well-being. The AAP also stresses that breaks should be considered a child’s personal time and should not be withheld as punishment or for academic reasons. Indeed, children who lose breaks because of behavioural or academic difficulties may be those who need its restorative benefits the most.
Breaks and Physical Health
Protecting opportunities for physical activity is particularly important at a time when childhood obesity, for example in the US, remains a major public health concern. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly one in five U.S. children and adolescents—19.7 percent—are affected by obesity. The CDC recommends at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and protected daily recess provides a consistent opportunity for children to move and contribute toward that goal.
While our obesity rates across Europe are lower, the benefits extend beyond exercise. Safe outdoor spaces allow children to run, explore, socialize, imagine, and develop independence. Outdoor play supports creativity, emotional regulation, coordination, and social skills. Breaks should therefore be viewed as an investment in the whole child rather than time taken away from education.
The Challenge of Screen-Based breaks
The growing use of technology presents an additional and different challenge. Even when break is provided, some children may spend that time indoors using laptops or tablets. Technology has an important educational role, but replacing active, social play with additional screen exposure can undermine the purpose of a break.
Extended screen use may contribute to eye strain, headaches, mental fatigue, reduced face-to-face interaction, and difficulty sustaining attention. More importantly, when devices replace active breaks, children lose valuable opportunities for movement, spontaneous social interaction, creativity, and psychological recovery from academic demands.
However, it would be equally simplistic to conclude that all screen time is harmful. Emerging research suggests that the relationship between screen use, physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and cognitive development is more complex.
Screen Time, Physical Activity, and Cognition
An eight-year Finnish follow-up study found that greater screen time during childhood was associated with better cognitive processing during adolescence. The study included 260 children who were followed into their teenage years. Researchers emphasized, however, that the findings demonstrate an association rather than proving that screen use directly improves cognition.
The nature of screen activity may be the key. Educational programs, creative projects, problem-solving, and other activities requiring active thinking are very different from passive consumption. As researchers suggest, parents and teachers should encourage children to use devices in ways that promote learning, creativity, problem-solving, and active thinking.
The study also found that the relationship between physical activity and cognitive performance was complex. Some forms of activity were associated with better working memory in girls and boys, while other measures showed no clear relationship. Differences were also observed according to sex and the type and intensity of activity. Researchers stressed that more intervention studies are needed to establish cause and effect.
These findings challenge the idea that screen time can be judged simply by the number of minutes spent on a device. What children do during that time matters. At the same time, the research should not be interpreted as suggesting that screens can replace physical activity or school yard breaks.
Finding the Balance
The real lesson is one of balance. Children need movement, outdoor play, face-to-face interaction, and unstructured time, but they also need to develop the digital skills required in modern life. The goal should be to ensure that technology complements rather than displaces other essential childhood experiences.
Schools should therefore protect breaks as genuine personal time. When indoor break is unavoidable, movement, games, creativity, and social interaction should take priority over automatically turning to screens. Parents can apply the same principle at home by considering not only how long children use devices, but also what they are doing and whether screen use is displacing sleep, exercise, family interaction, or outdoor play.
Ultimately, breaks are much more than a break from academics, just as screen time is more nuanced than a simple measure of harm. Children need opportunities to move, think, play, learn, connect, and recharge. Protecting meaningful breaks while encouraging purposeful, balanced technology use is therefore not a choice between physical activity and digital learning. It is about creating a healthier childhood in which both can have an appropriate place.
