Scientists studying a unique period in British history have discovered that people exposed to lower levels of sugar during the first 1,000 days of life—from conception until their second birthday—were less likely to develop several common cancers later in life. They also appeared to age more slowly and maintained healthier eating habits well into adulthood.

A Natural Experiment No Scientist Could Ever Create
Normally, studying the lifelong effects of infant nutrition would be almost impossible.
Researchers cannot divide newborn babies into different groups, feed one group more sugar than another, and then wait seventy years to compare health outcomes. Fortunately, history provided an unexpected opportunity.
Following the Second World War, sugar remained rationed in Britain until September 1953. When rationing ended, sugar consumption almost doubled. As a result, children born only months apart experienced very different levels of sugar exposure during pregnancy and early childhood.
Researchers examined health records from more than 64,000 people born between 1951 and 1956. Some spent most of their first 1,000 days living under sugar rationing, while others grew up during a period of rapidly increasing sugar availability.
The differences in health outcomes decades later were striking.
Lower Cancer Risk Many Years Later
People who experienced lower sugar exposure during their first 1,000 days had significantly lower rates of several major cancers later in life.
These included:
- Breast cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Liver cancer
- Rectal cancer
- Lung cancer
The strongest effect was seen in liver cancer, where rates were almost 70% lower among those exposed to greater sugar restriction in early life.
Even breast cancer, which showed the smallest reduction, occurred approximately 36% less frequently.
What makes these findings particularly remarkable is that these benefits did not become apparent until many decades after childhood.
Could Sugar Influence How Fast We Age?
The study uncovered another fascinating finding. People who experienced lower sugar exposure early in life appeared to age more slowly.
Researchers measured what is known as "biological age"—a measure of how old the body's cells and tissues appear to be, rather than the number of birthdays a person has celebrated. Two people may both be 70 years old chronologically, yet one person's body may function more like that of a 67-year-old while the other's resembles that of a 75-year-old.
According to the researchers, those who spent longer under sugar rationing during their first 1,000 days showed biological ageing equivalent to being approximately 2.2 years younger.
The Habit That Lasted Half a Century
Perhaps the most surprising discovery was not related to cancer or ageing. It was the lasting effect on eating habits.
Even at around 50 years of age, people who had lower sugar exposure during infancy continued to consume less sugar than their peers. They also tended to eat healthier diets overall and consumed fewer calories. This suggests that our preference for sweetness may begin forming far earlier than many people realise.
In simple terms, the sweeter foods a child becomes accustomed to in infancy, the more likely they may be to seek out sweet foods later in life.

The period from conception until a child's second birthday is often referred to by scientists as the "first 1,000 days."
